Cyber Bullying On the Rise

November 29th, 2007 Posted in Life Issues | No Comments »

I ran across this story at WebProNews - it appears that there is a lot of cyber bullying going on these days. In other words, bullies pushing their weight around as usual, but doing so online. Now, bullies have always been around. I was bullied myself up to the first grade when I finally decided to stick up for myself. After that, I was bullied no more. The fact that bullies have moved to the online front is interesting to say the least.

An excerpt from the WebProNews story:

Around two-thirds of children who say they have been bullied online have not received any previous form of harassment according to research from the University of California at Riverside published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

“Internet bullying has emerged as a new and growing form of social cruelty,” Kirk Williams and Nancy Guerra of the University of California wrote in the report. The researchers said that schools and parents need to work together to prevent such behavior without depriving children and teens of Internet access.

My Top 10 All-Time Favorite Movies List

November 28th, 2007 Posted in Hobbies and Interests | 1 Comment »

It is difficult to pick just ten from all the great movies that have ever been made, but here is my current top ten list.

1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) - Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.

2. Les Misérables (1998) - Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush & Uma Thurman.

3. Braveheart (1995) - Mel Gibson

4. As Good as It Gets (1997) - Jack Nicholson, Helen Hunt, Greg Kinnear & Cuba Gooding Jr.

5. O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) - George Clooney, John Turturro & Tim Blake Nelson.

6. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) - Jack Nicholson

7. Return To Me (2000) - David Duchovny, Minnie Driver, & Carroll O’Connor

8. Chocolat (2000) - Juliette Binoche & Johhny Depp

9. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1967) - Clint Eastwood & Lee Van Cleef

10. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring , The Two Towers & The Return of the King (2001-2003) - Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett & others

That was difficult as I feel I excluded so many good movies. Maybe I’ll have to organize them into categories next time (i.e. drama, comedy, action, thrillers, etc.)

Kids Want Everything Their Parents Have - Now!

November 11th, 2007 Posted in Personal | No Comments »

I don’t always understand the logic of today’s youth. They get out on their own, out from underneath mom and dad’s wings and they feel they have to have everything their parents have right away. A new car, fancy apartment, buying stuff on eBay, going out to eat all the time… the list goes on. The credit card companies help them to accomplish this. The problem is that most young people lack the foresight to see the consequences of living beyond their means.

They want large televisions, the fastest new computers, the fanciest cell phones, new cars, and of course have to have high speed Internet and cable TV. The problem is, they can’t afford this type of lifestyle. However, that doesn’t seem to stop them. “Just put it on credit,” seems to be the motto. Take Dell for example who frequently advertises that you can have a new computer for as little as $20 - $30 a month. This is true in part but what is not revealed is that the $20 - $30 one pays monthly does not touch the actual balance owed on that computer. In fact, it often does not even cover all the interest earned that period. The result - a debt that continues to grow thanks to finance charges.

Disneyland Updates: It Has Snowed at Disneyland

November 6th, 2007 Posted in All Things Disney | No Comments »

Well at least there is snow on Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. It’s all part of the Christmas decor that is currently being put into place at Disneyland. Unfortunately it looks like I am not going to make it this year (have gone the last four years in a row). I’m still holding out that we might be able to get over there for a couple of days before the year ends, but we will see.

At any rate, here are some photos of the castle with snow with compliments from MousePlanet.

My Pool Maintenance Guy Is Awesome

October 26th, 2007 Posted in Personal | No Comments »

After spending countless weekends brushing and sweeping my parent’s pool as a young child, I vowed to never own a swimming pool myself. They are just too much work. That changed a few years ago when we put in a pool. What changed in my thinking? Unlike the pool of my youth, this one was self-cleaning and self chlorinating. In other words, it is virtually maintenance free… well almost.

Disneyland Updates: $1 Billion Revamping of Disney’s California Adventure

October 19th, 2007 Posted in All Things Disney | No Comments »

Many would argue that California Adventure, Disney’s theme park adjacent to “the happiest place on Earth” is not Disneyland, however I beg to differ. True Disneyland and California Adventure are “separate” parks but when I am at Disneyland or rather The Disneyland Resort, I consider the Disneyland park itself, California Adventure and even Downtown Disney all part of the same experience. Therefore I have justified including a major update to the California Adventure theme park in an ongoing segment I call “Disneyland Updates” classified under the “All Things Disney” category of this blog. Whew - enough housekeeping already, let’s get on to the good stuff.

Led Zeppelin Succumbs To Internet Demand

October 16th, 2007 Posted in Hobbies and Interests | No Comments »

Although they haven’t toured since the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, Led Zeppelin has always maintained their status as one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. Let’s face it, you cannot listen to a classical rock radio station without hearing a least a handful of their hits each day. Many people unfamiliar with Led Zeppelin have been indirectly introduced to the band through Cadillac commercials using “Rock & Roll” as their theme song. They even still continue to inspire today’s young musicians with their diverse musical style. Fans have drooled for years over rumors that the band would reunite and go on tour, which has still not come to pass with exception of their one time reunion concert in London next month to benefit the Ahmet Ertegun Education Fund. However, despite the advancement of music sales on the Internet, Zeppelin has resisted offering their music for sale online… that is until now.
